FITMENT Fits many 1972-1991 Chrysler, Dodge, and Plymouth RWD vehicles equipped with the Chrysler 4‑pin electronic ignition control unit (fender/firewall‑mounted) and non‑Lean Burn ignition. Common engines include the 3.7L Slant‑Six (225) and LA‑series V8s (5.2L/5.9L), with coverage on select big‑block 6.6L/7.2L applications. Verify 4‑pin connector and non‑Lean Burn system before ordering. Chrysler LeBaron (1977-1980): 3.7L L6, 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8 Chrysler Newport (1976-1981): 3.7L L6, 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8 Chrysler New Yorker (1976-1979): 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8 Chrysler Town & Country (1976-1981): 3.7L L6, 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8 Chrysler Fifth Avenue (1983-1989): 5.2L V8 Dodge Aspen (1976-1980): 3.7L L6, 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8 Dodge Magnum (1978-1982): 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8, 6.6L V8 Dodge Monaco (1976-1978): 3.7L L6, 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8, 6.6L V8, 7.2L V8 Dodge D100/D150/D200/D250/D300/D350 (Pickups) (1977-1991): 3.7L L6, 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8 Dodge W100/W150/W200/W250/W300/W350 (4x4 Pickups) (1977-1991): 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8 Dodge Ramcharger (1974-1991): 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8 Plymouth Volare (1976-1980): 3.7L L6, 5.2L V8, 5.9L V8 Plymouth Valiant (1978): 5.9L V8
SYMPTOMS Typical failure signs include hot‑soak no‑start, intermittent stall, misfire, weak/no spark, or erratic timing. These modules often fail when overheated.
TROUBLESHOOTING Before replacing, verify coil power and ground, and test the distributor pickup and the ballast resistor (a failed ballast can mimic a bad module). On these pre‑OBD vehicles there are no stored diagnostic trouble codes—use a timing light or spark tester to confirm loss of spark during the fault. Many applications require the 4‑pin module and will specify 'w/o Lean Burn' or 'single plate pick‑up' in catalogs.
INSTALLATION Mount to clean, bare metal for a solid ground; tighten fasteners and confirm body‑to‑engine ground straps. Inspect the 4‑pin connector for corrosion; apply dielectric grease to the connector seal if desired. Do not substitute on Lean Burn systems. If a no‑start persists after installation, recheck the ballast resistor, distributor pickup air gap, and coil primary connections.
MAINTENANCE
GENERAL_NOTES Module location is typically on the fender or firewall. Some catalogs note special cases like California emissions or 'w/ single plate pick‑up'—match these notes to your vehicle. This is a direct‑fit OE‑style replacement from Standard Motor Products.
