Gates has been making belts since 1917.

Gates developed the rubber V-belt in 1917, and belts and hoses are still the core of what it makes. Its molded coolant hoses are pre-shaped to fit specific vehicles and rated from -40°F to 275°F, and its timing kits bundle the belt with the tensioners, idlers, and hardware the job calls for. Here you will find more than 14,400 Gates parts across belts and cooling, HVAC, engine, emission control, air and fuel delivery, and transmission.

            Hoses built to resist failure

Gates EPDM coolant hoses are engineered to resist electrochemical degradation, the leading cause of hose failure.

            Belt wear you can measure

Modern EPDM belts can wear out without cracking, so Gates recommends checking rib wear with a belt wear gauge.

            Timing kits with the pump

Gates says a belt-driven water pump should be replaced with the timing belt, and its kits include both.

What people ask before they buy Gates.

Eight answers covering belt wear, timing kits, coolant hoses, and fitment.

            01

Are Gates parts as good as the original equipment?

Gates supplies original equipment to automakers as well as the aftermarket. Its molded coolant hoses are pre-shaped to fit and built to specific vehicle manufacturer specifications. Check the product page for the details on a specific part.

            02

What Gates parts can I buy here?

More than 14,400 Gates parts across belts and cooling, HVAC, engine, emission control, air and fuel delivery, and transmission. Belts and cooling is the largest category, with more than 8,400 parts, and radiator coolant hoses are the largest single line, with 2,986 of them.

            03

How do I know my serpentine belt is worn out?

Do not wait for cracks. Gates notes that modern EPDM belts resist cracking and can run 100,000 miles or more with no visible cracks, while as little as 5% rib material loss can cause problems. A belt wear gauge pressed into the grooves gives the real answer: if it rocks side to side, the belt is due. Browse Gates belts and cooling parts, including belts, tensioners, and pulleys.

            04

Should I replace the water pump with the timing belt?

If the timing belt drives the water pump, yes. Gates says timing belt-driven water pumps should always be replaced at the same time as the timing belt, since a full rebuild can take 15 hours or more on an interference engine. Gates timing kits with water pump bundle the belt, tensioners, idlers, and pump in one box. Add your vehicle with the Search by Vehicle tool to see the Gates timing kits that fit it.

            05

            Why do coolant hoses fail?

Gates names electrochemical degradation as the leading cause of coolant hose failure, and it engineers its EPDM molded hoses to resist it. Gates also recommends replacing the hose clamps every time you install a new coolant hose. Browse Gates belts and cooling parts, including radiator hoses.

            06

How do I know a Gates part fits my vehicle?

Fitment is set part number by part number, so your own vehicle is the only reliable test. Add your year, make, and model with the Search by Vehicle tool, then check the fitment confirmation on the product page before the part goes in your cart.

            07

            Who makes Gates parts?

Gates, the Denver, Colorado company that Charles Gates Sr. founded in 1911 when he bought the Colorado Tire and Leather Company. His brother John Gates developed the rubber V-belt in 1917, and the company now trades on the New York Stock Exchange under the ticker GTES.
