Walker built the first aftermarket converter.

That was in 1978, when Walker worked closely with the EPA to develop it, and today it makes converters in both EPA-compliant and CARB-compliant versions. Its direct-fit parts are tailored to the size, shape, and hanger placement of the original, so they bolt on without welding, and its SoundFX mufflers are made from 100% aluminized steel for longer life than low-carbon steel. Here you will find more than 3,800 Walker exhaust parts, from catalytic converters and mufflers to pipes, resonators, and gaskets.

EPA and CARB versions

Walker makes converters to federal EPA standards and to California CARB standards.

Bolt-on direct fit

Direct-fit parts match the original hanger placement, so they install with no welding or fabrication.

Built to last longer

SoundFX mufflers use 100% aluminized steel for a longer service life than low-carbon steel.

What people ask before they buy Walker.

Eight answers covering emissions rules, check engine codes, mufflers, and fitment.

01

Do I need an EPA or a CARB catalytic converter?

It depends on where the vehicle is registered and how it was built. Walker lists California, New York, and Colorado as requiring CARB-compliant converters for all model years, and Maine for 2001 and newer vehicles, while most other states accept converters that meet federal EPA standards. Check the emissions label under your hood to see whether your vehicle is California-certified, and confirm a converter's compliance on its product page before you buy. A CARB-compliant converter carries an Executive Order number stamped on its body.

02

What Walker exhaust parts can I buy here?

More than 3,800 Walker exhaust parts, including catalytic converters, mufflers, exhaust pipes, resonators, tail pipes, and exhaust gaskets. Catalytic converters are the largest line, with 945 of them.

03

Will a new catalytic converter fix my P0420 code?

Not always. Walker notes that a P0420 low efficiency code does not always mean the converter needs to be replaced, since on newer vehicles the code can appear when the exhaust gases reaching the converter are out of balance. Correct any misfire, mass air flow, rich or lean, and oxygen sensor codes first, repair exhaust leaks, and confirm the oxygen sensors are working before you install a new catalytic converter.

04

Why did my catalytic converter fail?

Walker says converters are designed to last the life of the vehicle under normal conditions. The common causes of failure are physical damage from corrosion or road debris, contamination from burning oil, an internal coolant leak, or heavy carbon buildup, a melted substrate from engine misfires, and cold-quenching from driving through deep water or snow. Fix the root cause first, or the new converter can fail the same way.

05

What is the difference between direct-fit and universal exhaust parts?

Direct-fit parts are designed to bolt on your vehicle, matching the size, shape, and hanger placement of the original, with no welding or fabrication. Universal parts fit a range of vehicles but usually need cutting, welding, or new hangers to install. Direct fit is the easier choice for most daily drivers, while universal parts suit custom, performance, and vintage vehicles or cases where no direct-fit part exists.

06

How do I know my muffler needs to be replaced?

Walker points to three signs: a louder exhaust note from the back of the vehicle, lower gas mileage as the engine works harder, and exhaust fumes getting into the cabin. Fumes in the cabin are a safety concern, so have the exhaust checked right away. Browse every Walker muffler we carry.

07

How do I know a Walker part fits my vehicle?

Fitment is set part number by part number, so your own vehicle is the only reliable test. Add your year, make, and model with the Search by Vehicle tool, then check the fitment confirmation on the product page before the part goes in your cart.

08

Where do I start a warranty claim on a Walker part?

Walker handles warranty claims through the retailer where the part was purchased, so for a Walker part bought here, start with us. Coverage depends on the part, so reach our team through the Contact Us page with your order details.
